‘Screw him. He lost,’ Democrat says of Tuberville plan to end military promotion blockade

Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s push to offload the fight over Pentagon abortion policies onto Congress’ annual defense policy bill drew an angry response from the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee.

Politico is reporting that Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) called this a non-starter.

“No, screw him. He lost, and he’s trying to tear down this country because he disagrees with the policy,” Smith said of Tuberville. “If the Republicans insist upon that, we will not have an NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act). And I don’t believe they will insist on that.”

Today, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) attempted to move the nominations through unanimous consent, which would allow the promotions to be approved without a vote of the full Senate. Tuberville objected.

The move comes a few days after Tuberville indicated he wanted “to get this over with” – referring to his nine-month blockade of military promotions.

In the past, Tuberville faced off against his own Republican senatorial colleagues in a tense standoff, who said conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza illustrate a need for a resolution.

Tuberville began the blockade, which is impacting about 370 promotions, in protest to Pentagon policies that reimburse service members’ travel expenses for abortions if they are stationed in a state where the procedure is illegal.

Reversing the policy through the defense bill is one of several proposals Tuberville floated earlier this week.

The House version of the bill, opposed by most Democrats when it passed this summer, includes a provision to scuttle the abortion travel policy.

Democrats are unlikely to compromise, particularly after favorable results in Tuesday’s elections.
